Place Value Expectations

PLACE VALUE

Our focus this month in math is Place Value! Here are our learning goals for this unit:

  • I can count to 1000, including by 50s, 100s and 200s using a variety of tools

  • I can read, represent, compose and decompose, compare and order whole numbers up to 1000

  • I can round whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred

  • I can use place value when describing and representing multi-digit numbers in a variety of ways, including with base ten materials

Try to help your child consolidate this learning at home by having them skip count while waiting for the light to change in the car, while waiting for their sibling to get dressed, and while waiting for commercials/ads to be over. When shopping and looking at prices, ask your child to round the dollar amounts to the nearest 10. When a number comes up in a book, on the television, or in an address, ask them to tell you which digit is in the 100's column, or 10's column, or 1's column and what it's value is.

Multiplication & Division Expectations

 Hello Grade 3 families,

Our next unit in Math is Multiplication and Division.  We are starting with multiplication first.
Multiplication and Division Expectations

  1. I can use the properties of operations, and the relationships between multiplication and division, to solve problems and check calculations
  2. I can recall and demonstrate multiplication facts of 2, 5, and 10, and related division facts
  3. I can represent multiplication of numbers up to 10 × 10 and division up to 100 ÷ 10, using a variety of tools and drawings, including arrays
  4. I can represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division, including problems that involve groups of one half, one fourth, and one third, using tools and drawings
  5. I can represent the connection between the numerator of a fraction and the repeated addition of the unit fraction with the same denominator using various tools and drawings, and standard fractional notation
  6. I can use the ratios of 1 to 2, 1 to 5, and 1 to 10 to scale up numbers and to solve problems

Mass and Capacity

Mass & Capacity Learning Goals

  • I can use non-standard units appropriately to estimate, measure, and compare capacity, and explain the effect that overfilling or underfilling, and gaps between units, have on accuracy

  • I can compare, estimate, and measure the mass of various objects, using a pan balance and non-standard units

Have your child read the mass and capacity on different containers in your pantry and fridge and have them help out when measuring ingredients for different recipes.  Try practising these online games:

Linear Measurement

 Linear Measurement

We have now begun our unit on Measurement. Practice these skills at home by asking your child to give an estimate for an object in your home and then you give one too! After, measure it using a ruler or measuring tape and the closest to the estimate gets 10 points. First to 100 points wins! You can also ask your child if they would measure specific items in mm, cm, m, or km.

Expectations:
  • I can use appropriate units of length to estimate, measure, and compare the perimeters of polygons and curved shapes, and construct polygons with a given perimeter
  • I can explain the relationships between millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres and use benchmarks
  • I can use appropriate non-standard units to measure area
  • I can use square centimetres (cm2) and square metres (m2) to estimate, measure, and compare the areas of various two-dimensional shapes
