We have a field trip planned in June. More information to come in the next few weeks.

Here are the math expectations for the next couple of weeks:

Gr. 2 - Fractions:

  • use drawings to represent, solve, and compare the results of fair-share problems that involve sharing up to 10 items among 2, 3, 4, and 6 sharers, including problems that result in whole numbers, mixed numbers, and fractional amounts
  • recognize that one third and two sixths of the same whole are equal, in fair-sharing context

Gr. 3 - Fractions:

  • use drawings to represent, solve, and compare the results of fair-share problems that involve sharing up to 20 items among 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 sharers, including problems that result in whole numbers, mixed numbers, and fractional amounts
  • represent and solve fair-share problems that focus on determining and using equivalent fractions, including problems that involve halves, fourths, and eighths; thirds and sixths; and fifths and tenths
Financial Literacy:

Gr. 2

  • identify different ways of representing the same amount of money up to Canadian 200¢ using various combinations of coins, and up to $200 using various combinations of $1 and $2 coins and $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills

Gr. 3

  • estimate and calculate the change required for various simple cash transactions involving whole-dollar amounts and amounts of less than one dollar

WELCOME TO GR. 2/3

It’s back to school time again and I'm looking forward to a year of learning, fun and adventures!

Here are a few notes to help the year run smoothly:

School ends at 3:45pm

Lunch - Please send a lunch (no soda pop) that should take no longer than 15 minutes to eat. Please provide your child with 2 small healthy snacks to be eaten during morning and afternoon snack time.

** Reminder: We are a nut free classroom **

Agenda - Please read & initial the agenda every night. Feel free to write any questions or comments you have in this book in the space provided. Important notes will also be sent home using the homework folder and/or agenda.

Headphones - these are used for computers. Please provide your child with a pair. Over the head ones work best and they can be found at most dollar stores.

Indoor Shoes - Please provide your child with a pair of indoor shoes they can keep at school. Make sure they are shoes they can put on independently.

Change in end of day routine - Any changes must be sent to the office in writing (note/email) or a phone call. If possible, please do this by 3:00 as it's very busy at the end of the day in the office.

In the classroom - I would appreciate any donations of …

  • Boxes of tissues for the class

  • Large Ziploc Bags

  • Disinfectant Wipes (ie: Lysol) as we have NO sink in the class

**Please label ALL school items - school bag, shoes, jackets, hoodies, etc.**   You would be amazed how quickly the lost & found articles pile up.

“Not Mine” owned everything in last year’s lost & found.

I have this class blog that I update periodically throughout the year. There will be a note in the student agendas letting you know when to look at it.

Please be sure to check out the St. Bernard School website.      https://ber.ocsb.ca/

Geometric Reasoning Expectations

Geometric Reasoning (2D & 3D shapes)

Expectations:

I can  sort, construct, and identify cubes, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, and cones by comparing their faces, edges, vertices, and angles

I can compose and decompose various structures, and identify the two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects that these structures contain

I can identify congruent lengths, angles, and faces of three-dimensional objects by mentally and physically matching them, and determine if the objects are congruent

Data Management Expectations

Data Literacy

We began our Data Literacy Unit on Monday - here are the new learning expectations and some tips on how you can practice at home:

  • I can collect data by conducting a simple survey
  • I can collect and organize and display data in charts, tables, and graphs with appropriate titles and labels
  • I can read data presented in charts, tables, and graphs, then describe the data using comparative language
  • I can interpret and draw conclusions from data
  • I can demonstrate an understanding of mode and mean and identify them both in a set of data
Some ways that you can practice at home:
Sort objects at home (sort fruit & veggies into the fridge after shopping, sort coins in different ways), take surveys at home (who likes chicken more than beef, what type of pizza does everyone like in your family), if you see a graph or table in a book, newspaper, magazine, social media - ask your child to show you the labels, ask which is most popular, which is least popular, what does the graph tell you.

LINEAR MEASUREMENT

Linear Measurement Expectations

  • I can use appropriate units of length to estimate, measure, and compare the perimeters of polygons and curved shapes, and construct polygons with a given perimeter

  • I can explain the relationships between millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres as metric units of length, and use benchmarks for these units to estimate lengths

  • I can use various units of different sizes to measure the same attribute of a given item, and demonstrate that even though using different-sized units produces a different count, the size of the attribute remains the same

  • I can compare the areas of two-dimensional shapes by matching, covering, or decomposing and recomposing the shapes, and demonstrate that different shapes can have the same area

  • I can use appropriate non-standard units to measure area, and explain the effect that gaps and overlaps have on accuracy

  • use square centimetres (cm2) and square metres (m2) to estimate, measure, and compare the areas of various two-dimensional shapes, including those with curved sides

  • Here are some online games: Measuring Fun , Using a Ruler, Area Game , Perimeter Game , Area Builder
